How to Prepare Items for a Storage Unit

How to Prepare Items for a Storage Unit

Getting ready to put some of your items in a storage unit? At A to Z Storage Center, we know that little preparation often goes a long way. Pack smart, and you’ll protect your belongings, maximize your available space, and make every future visit to your unit easier. Here’s a quick overview of what to do before you move anything in:

  1. Clean and dry all items before storing
  2. Disassemble large furniture when possible
  3. Use quality packing materials
  4. Label every box clearly
  5. Create an inventory list

Now, let’s break each of these down.

1. Clean and Dry Everything First

Dirt, moisture, and crumbs or other food residue can cause serious damage over time. (Think mold, rust, and pests—no thanks.) To combat this, clean everything before you store it. Wipe down appliances, furniture, and other hard surfaces. Wash and fully dry any fabric items like curtains, cushions, or clothing before packing them away. This will keep your items in good order before they even get to your unit.

2. Disassemble Large Furniture

Items like beds, shelving units, and tables take up far less space when broken down, giving you more usable space in your unit. Remove legs, detach headboards, and keep all hardware in sealed, labeled bags taped directly to the corresponding piece. This keeps your space and belongings organized now and makes reassembly straightforward later.

3. Use Quality Packing Materials

Thin boxes and cheap tape can fail faster than you think, especially over a long storage period. Invest in:

  • Sturdy, uniform boxes (this will make them easier to stack)
  • Bubble wrap or packing paper for protecting fragile items
  • Plastic bins for anything moisture-sensitive
  • Furniture covers or moving blankets to protect the surfaces of large items

Avoid using plastic bags for storing items, as they can easily trap heat and moisture.

4. Label Every Box Clearly

You don’t want to dig through 20 boxes later in search of just one item, do you? Label each box on the top and sides with its contents and the room it originally came from or belongs to. Color-coded labels can work especially well to keep track of items from multiple rooms or locations.

5. Create an Inventory List

A simple list, whether on paper or in a notes app, often saves a lot of frustration down the line. Record what you’ve stored, which box it’s in, and where that box is located in the unit. Don’t forget to update it whenever you add or remove items!
